Dublin Diaries: From Classrooms to the City’s Charms and Cliffs - by Anja Smith-Fink
I'm thrilled to share my remarkable two-week teacher training adventure with Europass Teacher Training Academy in the enchanting city of Dublin. This journey wasn't just about professional development, it was an enriching experience that combined learning, exploration, and cultural activities. Join me as I recount some of the moments I had during this unforgettable experience.
Diverse Learning: Classroom Management Solutions for Teachers
During my two-week-stay in Dublin, I took two different courses. The first course, "Classroom Management Solutions for Teachers," was a delightful experience in which I learned about the latest methodologies and classroom tools that foster engagement and participation. Through reflective practices, teacher observations, and lively discussions, we focused on motivation in the classroom, cooperation, and evaluation strategies. The innovative concept of the Flipped Classroom left me inspired, and I left the course equipped with fresh insights and strategies to make my classroom a more interactive.
The second course, tailored for experienced English language teachers, was a breath of fresh air. "Refresher Course for Already Practicing English Language Teachers" introduced me to methods, strategies, and tools to spice up my teaching approach. Emphasizing student-centered techniques like Communicative Language Teaching, Task-Based Learning, and Content-Based Instruction, the course empowered me to rethink my language teaching practices. I discovered new ways to use authentic materials, fostering a dynamic and engaging learning environment.
Dublin Unveiled: Exploring the Sights and Sounds
Exploring Dublin and its surroundings was an unforgettable experience. My journeys took me to some truly remarkable places, each with its unique charm and beauty.
The afternoon I spent in Howth, a calm fishing village, was one of my personal highlights. I remember strolling along the pier with some of the teachers I met in my course, enjoying the fresh sea breeze, and having a delicious plate of fish and chips at a local eatery. The views from Howth Summit were absolutely stunning, with the Dublin Bay stretching out before us and the harbor with its many colourful boats. I also had the opportunity to visit Howth Castle, adding a touch of history to my adventure.
The breathtaking cliff walk from Greystones to Bray was another unforgettable experience. It was a perfect way to experience Ireland's natural beauty with my fellow teacher colleagues. The huge cliffs, crashing waves, and the scent of the sea created a sense of tranquility.
My visit to the Oscar Wilde House was a literary treat. This historic residence, once the childhood home of the famous writer Oscar Wilde, offered a glimpse into his early life and the inspiration behind his work. The Victorian-era architecture was fascinating. Seeing the place where Wilde's creativity was nurtured deepened my appreciation for his literary contributions.
Immersed in History and Culture
Dublin's rich history and literary heritage were ever-present during my visit. The Oscar Wilde House, with its guided tour, gave me unique insights into the life of the renowned playwright that I have admired for a long time. The EPIC Museum, a journey through Ireland's history of emigration, was both enlightening and moving. The interactive exhibits at EPIC not only engage the senses but also invite visitors to participate in a unique exploration divided into various topics, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a dynamic cultural experienceAnd of course, the lively music scene on Grafton Street highlighted the city's vibrant cultural pulse.
Culinary Delights and Warmth of Pubs
Dublin's culinary scene was another thing I will never forget. The cozy, friendly and homely atmosphere of various pubs and the authentic cuisine there were a great place for sharing stories and making new friends. I enjoyed the traditional Irish dishes and the warm camaraderie of fellow educators from all corners of Europe.
Exchange of Experiences: Networking with Educators
One of the most enriching aspects of this journey was the opportunity to connect with teachers from diverse backgrounds. Sharing experiences, discussing teaching practices, and exchanging ideas created a tapestry of insights that transcended borders. We brainstormed solutions to common challenges and inspired each other with innovative approaches. Also, it was somehow soothing for my soul to see that we all fight similar battles at school.
In conclusion, my two-week teacher training course in Dublin was a multifaceted experience that blended professional growth, cultural exploration, and promoted a sense of community among teachers from all around Europe. The courses provided me with fresh teaching perspectives, while the city itself offered breathtaking scenery, historical depth, and a warm, vibrant atmosphere. The memories I've made and the connections I've tied will undoubtedly enrich my teaching journey for years to come.
